If there’s one thing I’ve learned from doing activities with my kids, it’s that some of the most fun ones are also the messiest!
From squishy rainbow spaghetti and colorful paint to bubbly science experiments, messy play gives kids the chance to touch, explore, experiment and simply have fun. And while there may be a little cleanup afterward, I’ve learned not to worry too much when my toddler gets messy

This heart sponge painting activity is such a simple way to let kids get creative—and yes, a little messy! Instead of using a regular paintbrush, kids dip heart-shaped sponges into paint and stamp them onto paper to create colorful heart art.

I simply hide small toys inside the jelly and let my child squish, scoop and dig through it to rescue them. The slippery, wobbly texture makes the activity much more exciting—and definitely a little messy!
It’s also easy to change depending on what your child loves. Just swap the hidden toys for cars, animals, dinosaurs or whatever you already have at home.

For a seasonal twist on jelly play, this fall Jell-O sensory bin combines the wobbly texture of Jell-O with simple nature treasures.
I used orange Jell-O and added fall-inspired items for my child to squish, scoop, dig and explore. The bright orange color makes the whole activity feel perfect for autumn, while the slippery Jell-O adds plenty of messy sensory fun.

This magic oil and water experiment is one of my favorite ways to combine messy play with a little bit of science.
Kids can drop, pour, swirl and watch the colors move through the oil and water, creating beautiful patterns along the way. It’s simple to set up, but the reaction feels almost magical to little ones.

This ocean sensory bin is an easy way to bring a little beach-inspired messy play indoors. I used blue rice for the water and white flour for the sandy shore, then added ocean-themed toys for exploring.
Kids can scoop, pour, dig, mix and move everything around as they create their own little ocean world. And once that blue rice starts mixing with the flour, things can definitely get messy—but that’s all part of the sensory fun!

For an even messier version of our ocean play, this Jell-O ocean sensory bin is so much fun. Instead of rice and flour, I use blue Jell-O to create a wobbly, slippery ocean and add ocean animals for kids to discover.

If your child loves trucks and digging, this construction sensory bin is an easy messy play idea to try. I use homemade taste-safe sand as the base and add construction vehicles to create a little work site right at home.
Kids can dig, scoop, pour, push and load the sand with their trucks, making their own roads and construction sites as they play. The sand will probably escape the bin at some point, but that’s part of the hands-on fun!

For a seasonal messy play idea, these Halloween rice sensory bins are simple to put together and so much fun for little hands. I created witch and ghost-themed versions using colorful rice and a few Halloween-inspired additions.
Kids can scoop, pour, dig, fill and empty as they explore the rice and discover what’s hiding inside. Yes, you may find a few grains of rice on the floor afterward, but that’s all part of sensory play!
