Sometimes the simplest activities end up being the most magical.
One afternoon we tried a quick science activity using just oil, water, and a few drops of food coloring. I honestly thought it would take five minutes… but my toddler stayed completely fascinated watching the colorful bubbles float and move around.
It looked like a tiny lava lamp inside the bowl!

If you’re looking for an easy sensory activity that feels like a science experiment, this oil and water color experiment is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers.

What You Need
The best part about this activity is that you probably already have everything at home.
- Vegetable oil
- Water
- Food coloring (a few different colors)
- A large clear bowl or glass container
- Small bowls or cups
- A spoon, dropper, or pipette
Optional:
- A tray or towel for easy cleanup

Step 1: Prepare the Colored Water
Start by filling a few small bowls with water.
Add a few drops of food coloring into each bowl and mix. We used several bright colors like:
- blue
- green
- pink
- yellow
Kids love watching the water change color during this step.
Step 2: Fill a Large Bowl With Oil
Next, pour vegetable oil into a clear glass bowl or container.

Fill it about two-thirds full so there is plenty of room for the colored water drops to move around.
Using a clear bowl makes the experiment much more fun because kids can see everything happening.
Step 3: Let Kids Add the Colors
Now comes the fun part.
Give your child a spoon or dropper and let them scoop some colored water from the small bowls. Then they gently drop it into the oil.
Immediately, something interesting happens.

Instead of mixing, the colored water forms little floating bubbles inside the oil.
Step 4: Watch the Colorful Bubbles
As the drops move through the oil, they create beautiful floating circles of color.
Some look like tiny planets, while others slowly drift through the bowl like a lava lamp. My toddler loved watching the bubbles form and move around.

This part kept their attention for much longer than I expected.
Step 5: Keep Experimenting With Colors
Kids can keep adding more drops of different colors to see what happens.

They might try:
- adding many small drops
- pouring larger drops
- mixing several colors together
Every time the bowl starts to fill with colorful bubbles, it looks a little different.
My toddler loved this experiment so much that we tried another version using milk instead of water. If you’d like to explore a different science activity, check out our Milk and Oil Experiment, where we turned colorful drops into a beautiful autumn tree.

Why Toddlers Love This Activity
This activity combines sensory play with early science learning.
Kids practice:
- fine motor skills
- color recognition
- curiosity and observation
- cause-and-effect thinking
Plus, it feels a little bit like magic.
The Simple Science Behind It
Oil and water don’t mix.
Water is heavier than oil, so when colored water drops fall into the oil they stay together as small bubbles instead of dissolving.
This creates the beautiful floating color effect kids love watching.
A Simple Activity That Feels Like Magic
Activities like this remind me that you don’t need complicated supplies to keep kids engaged.
Just a few kitchen ingredients can turn into a colorful science experiment that toddlers want to try again and again.
