Regular sand can be tricky with little ones who still put things in their mouths. This recipe uses simple kitchen ingredients, making it a great alternative.
One of my favorite things about this sensory bin is the homemade play sand.
Now, to be clear, we don’t really want to encourage kids to eat it. This is a sensory activity, not a snack! But because it’s made with ingredients from the kitchen, I’ve never worried about a little one tasting a tiny smidge while exploring.
Ingredients
🌾 4 cups whole-wheat flour
🫒 ½ cup vegetable oil
Directions
- Add the flour to a large bowl or sensory bin.
- Pour in the vegetable oil.
- Mix thoroughly until combined.
- Continue mixing until the texture resembles damp beach sand.
The finished mixture looks remarkably similar to real sand and holds its shape beautifully for construction play.

Spread the homemade sand evenly throughout your sensory bin.

We’ve successfully stored ours for up to a month.
If you choose to use baby oil instead of vegetable oil, the sand may last even longer. However, it will no longer be taste-safe.
