✅ Encourages sensory exploration

🍂 Helpful Tips Before You Start

Note: This fall sensory bin uses natural materials such as chestnuts, acorns, and pinecones. Since some of these items can be choking hazards, close supervision is important, especially for younger toddlers.

If you’re creating this activity for a baby or a child who still mouths objects, consider skipping the nature treasures and simply offering chunks of orange Jell-O for sensory exploration. The squishy texture provides plenty of sensory fun while reducing the risk of choking.

🧡 Expect a Little Mess (And That’s Okay!)

I’ll be honest—Jell-O sensory play can get a bit messy, especially with curious toddlers who love to scoop, squish, and explore with both hands.

We tried to keep most of the play inside the sensory bin, but a few pieces of Jell-O inevitably escaped onto the table. Thankfully, the fun and engagement were completely worth the cleanup!

To make cleanup easier, try:

  • Placing the sensory bin on a plastic tablecloth or tarp
  • Setting up the activity outdoors on a warm day
  • Having a damp cloth nearby for quick wipe-ups

Step 1: Make the Jelly

  • Prepare jelly following package instructions

Step 2: Add Nature Treasures

  • Place nature treasures into the liquid before it fully sets
  • You can:
    • Fully submerge them
    • Or leave parts sticking out for easier grabbing

Step 3: Let It Set

  • Pop it in the fridge until firm

Step 4: Invite Your Child to Play

Provide scoops, spoons, or small containers and let your child explore freely.

They can:

  • Scoop and transfer treasures
  • Squish the Jell-O
  • Stir and mix materials
  • Collect items into bowls
  • Observe different textures
  • Create their own imaginative play

There is no right or wrong way to play.

🌰 What My Toddler Did

My toddler immediately began stirring the orange Jell-O with a wooden scoop and collecting pinecones, chestnuts, and acorns into a small bowl.

He loved squishing the jelly between his fingers, moving nature treasures around the bin, and discovering hidden objects underneath the Jell-O pieces.

The bright orange color paired beautifully with the fall leaves and natural materials, creating a simple but engaging autumn sensory experience.

🍂 Tips for Success

  • Place a plastic tablecloth underneath for easier cleanup.
  • Supervise closely when using small natural materials.
  • Encourage exploration rather than directing play.
  • Collect nature items together during a family walk before setting up the bin.
  • Store the sensory bin in the refrigerator if you plan to use it again later that day.

🍁 Variations to Try

Want to change things up?

Try adding:

  • Mini pumpkins
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Fall cookie cutters
  • Measuring cups
  • Toy forest animals
  • Silicone muffin cups

Each addition creates new opportunities for exploration and imaginative play.

🌰 Keep the Fun Going Longer

One of my favorite things about this activity is how easy it is to extend the play.

Even after my toddler had collected all the pinecones, chestnuts, acorns, and leaves, we simply buried them back into the Jell-O and started the treasure hunt all over again.

You can also encourage your child to:

  • Sort the nature treasures
  • Scoop and transfer them into bowls
  • Hide and find objects again
  • Mix and stir the Jell-O

Simple activities like this often hold children’s attention much longer than we expect!

I would place this section right after the materials list and before the instructions. It naturally answers parent concerns before they commit to setting up the activity, which tends to improve time-on-page and reduce bounce rate for mom blogs. 🍂🧡🌰
