Rainy Day Activities for Kids: 20 Easy Indoor Ideas You’ll You’ll Use Again and Again

Every family has those days when the rain changes all your plans.

Instead of heading to the park or playing outside, everyone ends up gathered around the kitchen table wondering what to do next. I’ve learned that those unexpected indoor days often become our favorite ones. They’re the days we paint with forks, make colorful science experiments, squish homemade dough, and laugh together over the simplest activities.

That’s exactly why I put together 20 rainy day activities for kids. These are the activities my own children have genuinely enjoyed, and they’re all simple enough for busy parents to set up with supplies you probably already have at home.

1. Magic Oil and Water Experiment

We tried a quick science activity using just oil, water, and a few drops of food coloring. I honestly thought it would take five minutes… but my toddler stayed completely fascinated watching the colorful bubbles float and move around.

It looked like a tiny lava lamp inside the bowl!

As the drops move through the oil, they create beautiful floating circles of color.

Some look like tiny planets, while others slowly drift through the bowl like a lava lamp. My toddler loved watching the bubbles form and move around.

2. Simple Heart Sponge Art

We used a simple heart template, washable paint, and a sponge dabber to create colorful heart artwork with a surprise white heart hidden in the middle. The stamping motion was perfect for little hands, and my toddler stayed focused much longer than I expected.

3. Sticky Ball Wall

I originally set up the tape with colorful plastic balls, but before long my toddler started experimenting with everything he could find! He happily stuck toy balls, smoothie bottle caps, and other lightweight toys onto the sticky strips. I loved watching him test different objects to see what would stick. It became less about following directions and more about exploring, experimenting, and using his imagination.
