1. Oil and Water Experiment
If you’ve never tried this classic experiment, you’re in for a treat.
Children are fascinated as colorful droplets float, separate, and dance around the water. It feels like watching tiny planets moving through space!
This activity is perfect for introducing the idea that not all liquids mix together.
What You’ll Need
- Vegetable oil
- Water
- Food coloring
- A clear glass or jar
Start by filling a few small bowls with water.
Add a few drops of food coloring into each bowl and mix. We used several bright colors like:

Next, pour vegetable oil into a clear glass bowl or container.
Kids Will Learn

2. Magical Milk and Oil Experiment
This colorful experiment is one of those activities that looks almost too beautiful to be science.
With just a few kitchen ingredients and a little branch we picked up outside, my toddler created a beautiful autumn tree filled with colorful “leaves.” He loved carefully adding each drop and watching the colors float in the oil. It almost looked like magic!
Materials
- Vegetable oil
- Milk
- Liquid food coloring (yellow, orange, red, and green work perfectly for fall)
- A shallow white plate or tray
- Small cups
- Pipette, eye droppers , or teaspoon
- One small tree branch collected outside
3. Earth Day Baking Soda and Vinegar STEM Activity
Nothing says “science is fun” quite like a fizzy reaction!
This Earth Day-inspired experiment combines creativity with one of the most exciting chemical reactions children can safely observe.
What You’ll Need
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Food coloring
- Tray or container
Pour baking soda into a tray and smooth it out.
In small cups, mix vinegar with food coloring:
Keep it simple. Toddlers don’t need perfection—they just need color and movement.
Kids Will Learn
- Simple chemical reactions
- Cause and effect
- Observation and experimentation
Show your toddler how to pour or drip the colored vinegar onto the baking soda.
And then…
FIZZ!
The reaction starts instantly—bubbles, sounds, movement. It’s the kind of thing that makes little kids go “whoa!”
