🧸 What We Did
We used playdough and dry pasta to make little “spiky creatures” (my toddler thought they were hedgehogs 🦔).
He:
- Pushed pasta into the playdough
- Pulled it out and tried again
- Added more and more “spikes”
- Turned them into funny little characters
It turned into both sensory play and imaginative play without any complicated setup.

🛠️ What You Need
- Playdough (store-bought or homemade)
- Dry pasta:
- Penne (tube pasta works great)
- Spaghetti (break into smaller pieces)
- Optional: small items for eyes (beans, seeds — supervised)
We used homemade playdough, and it turned out so soft and colorful. If you want to try it, I shared the simple recipe here: [Easy Homemade Playdough Recipe]

🎨 How to Set Up This Activity
Step 1: Prepare the Playdough
Roll the playdough into small balls (about palm-sized).
Flatten the bottom slightly so it sits steady.

Step 2: Add the Pasta
Give your toddler a mix of:
- Short spaghetti pieces
- A few penne pieces
Let them explore the materials first.

Step 3: Show Them Once
Demonstrate how to:
- Push pasta into the dough
- Pull it back out
That’s all you need—then let them take over.
Step 4: Let Them Create
Your toddler will naturally start:
- Adding “spikes”
- Sticking pasta all around
- Making their own creations
You can guide gently with:
- “Let’s make a hedgehog!”
- “Wow, that one has so many spikes!”
Step 5: Add Eyes (Optional but Fun)
Press in small pieces to make eyes and turn them into little creatures.
This adds a whole new level of imaginative play.
🧠 Why This Activity Is So Good for Toddlers
This simple setup helps build:
- Fine motor skills (pushing and gripping)
- Hand-eye coordination
- Sensory exploration
- Creativity and imagination
And the best part? It just feels like play to them.
⚠️ Safety Notes
- Always supervise (small pieces can be a choking hazard)
- Skip spaghetti if your toddler still puts things in their mouth
- Use larger, safer items if needed
💡 Why I Love This Activity
This is one of those activities that:
- Takes less than 5 minutes to set up
- Uses things you already have at home
- Keeps toddlers busy and focused
- Can be reused again and again
Honestly, it’s one of those go-to ideas I keep coming back to.
