I don’t know about your house, but as soon as summer arrives, everything somehow becomes about ice cream! 🍦 My toddler gets excited every time he sees an ice cream cone, so one afternoon I cut out a simple paper cone, grabbed a few craft supplies, and thought we’d make one quick activity together.
Well… one craft turned into another!
The next day we tried colorful paper circles. Then we stamped paint with a potato masher. Another day we used play dough, and before long we were decorating ice cream cones with googly eyes, glitter, pom-poms, and all sorts of fun materials we already had at home. Every version was a little different, but they all had one thing in common—my toddler couldn’t wait to make “just one more!”

If you’re looking for an easy craft to start with, this classic paper ice cream cone is always a winner. All you need are colorful paper circles, a paper cone, and a glue stick. It’s simple enough for toddlers but still gives them plenty of opportunities to make their own creative choices.
My toddler loved deciding which color scoop to add next and carefully pressing each one onto the cone. It was such a simple activity, but he stayed focused from start to finish and was so proud of his colorful masterpiece.

Who knew a potato masher could make such fun artwork?
Instead of using a paintbrush, we dipped a potato masher into washable paint and stamped textured circles onto the paper. The pattern looked surprisingly similar to real scoops of ice cream, and my toddler couldn’t stop laughing every time he lifted the masher to reveal the print.

🍦8. Giant Ice Cream Sensory Art with Edible Paint
Instead of sitting at a table, I wanted this activity to feel extra special, so I covered our painting area with black plastic and used masking tape to create a giant ice cream cone outline.
One of my favorite things about this activity is that we used homemade edible paint made with yogurt and food coloring.
Since toddlers are naturally curious and sometimes like to taste everything they touch, using edible paint gave me extra peace of mind while they explored. Although we weren’t making a snack, I didn’t have to worry if a tiny bit ended up on little fingers or lips.
To create our giant ice cream, I first outlined a large cone and three scoops with masking tape. For the cone, I brushed on glue and sprinkled unsweetened cocoa powder, giving it the look and texture of a real chocolate waffle cone.
