Turn It Into a Pretend Dentist Activity

If your child enjoys this dental health activity, you can take the idea one step further with a pretend dentist set.

The Melissa & Doug Super Smile Dentist Play Set is such a fun extension because kids can move from simply learning about teeth to actually pretending to be the dentist. The set includes oversized pretend teeth along with dental tools and accessories, so kids can examine teeth, practice brushing, and act out their own little dentist visits.

Why This Dental Health Preschool Activity Is Great for Kids

Activities like this help children learn through play. While your child is creating their “teeth,” they are also practicing important developmental skills.

This activity helps build:

  • Fine motor skills
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Early counting skills
  • Understanding of dental hygiene
  • Sensory exploration

And best of all, kids see it as playtime, not a lesson.

Materials You’ll Need

You only need a few simple supplies:

  • Orange, red, or pink playdough (to represent gums)
  • White beans (to represent teeth)
You can also use white pasta or small shells.
  • A piece of paper or placemat
  • Optional: a toy toothbrush for pretend brushing

How to Do This Dental Health Preschool Activity

Step 1: Set Up the Activity

Start by placing a piece of paper on the table to keep the area clean. Put the playdough and a small pile of white beans nearby so your child can easily reach them.

Preschoolers love having their own little workspace.

Step 2: Make the “Gums”

Ask your child to roll the playdough into a long snake shape.

Once it’s rolled out, gently curve it into a smile shape. This will represent the gums.

Rolling playdough is great for strengthening little hand muscles.

Step 3: Press the Dough Down

Have your child gently press the playdough onto the paper so it stays in place.

Now the “gums” are ready for teeth!

Step 4: Add the Teeth

Give your child the white beans and show them how to press each one into the playdough.

Encourage them to place the beans along the curved shape to create a row of teeth.

This step is wonderful for fine motor development, since kids use their fingers to pick up and press each bean.

Step 5: Fill the Smile with Teeth

Continue adding beans until the whole smile is filled with teeth.

This is also a great time to practice counting:

“Let’s count how many teeth are in our mouth!”

Pair the Activity With a Book About Teeth

Another easy way to build on this activity is to read a book about teeth together afterward.

The Tooth Book: For Children to Enjoy Learning about Teeth, Cavities, and Other Dental Health Facts by Mark Bacera, Mami Bacera, and Mae Bacera introduces children to teeth and dental health in a format created especially for young readers.

I love the idea of pairing a book with a hands-on activity like this because kids get to explore the same topic in two completely different ways. After they’ve been busy brushing, cleaning, and playing with their pretend teeth, you can sit down together and talk about why we brush our teeth, what cavities are, and how we keep our teeth healthy.

It turns a simple preschool activity into a little dental-health learning experience without making it feel like a lesson.

Step 6: Talk About Brushing Teeth

Once the teeth are finished, you can turn it into a mini dental health lesson.

Talk with your child about:

  • Why we brush our teeth
  • Brushing in the morning and before bed
  • Cleaning the front and back teeth

If you have a toy toothbrush, your child can even practice brushing the bean teeth.

Why I Love This Dental Health Preschool Activity

This activity is such a fun way to introduce dental care concepts to young children without making it feel like a lesson.

Preschoolers get to:

  • create
  • explore textures
  • strengthen fine motor skills
  • learn about healthy habits

And honestly, anything that makes kids excited about brushing their teeth is a win in my book!

If you’re planning a dental health theme for preschool, this easy playdough teeth activity is a fun, low-prep idea that kids really enjoy.

Try it at home or in the classroom — your little learners will love making their own silly toothy smiles!
