Easy Earth Day Activity for Toddlers That Keeps Them Busy (So Simple)

This might be the easiest toddler activity I’ve ever set up… and somehow it kept my toddler busy way longer than expected.

All we used were cotton pads, colored water, and droppers—and it turned into the sweetest little Earth Day craft.

If your toddler loves hands-on (and slightly messy) activities like this, I also shared another favorite Easy Science Experiment for Toddlers (Fizzy STEM Activity + Earth Day Idea) with Printables

🌍 What We Did

We made little “Earths” using:

  • cotton rounds
  • blue and green colored water
  • droppers (which toddlers LOVE)

I showed my toddler once how to use the dropper, and after that—he was completely into it.

He started with blue (the ocean), then added green (the land), and watched as the colors spread and blended together.

Honestly, some of them really looked like tiny Earths!

🧠 Why This Activity Is So Good for Toddlers

This isn’t just a cute craft—it’s packed with learning (without feeling like learning).

✔️ Fine motor skills – squeezing and controlling the dropper
✔️ Hand-eye coordination – aiming and placing drops
✔️ Sensory play – watching colors spread and absorb
✔️ Early science – simple color mixing
✔️ Earth Day awareness – introducing land + water concepts

And the best part? Your toddler stays focused way longer than expected.

🛠️ What You’ll Need

  • Cotton rounds (these become your “Earths”)
  • Blue and green food coloring or liquid watercolors
  • Small jars or cups
  • Droppers/pipettes
  • A tray or wipeable surface

💡 Pro tip: Lay down a towel or mat—it can get splashy!

👩‍👦 How to Set It Up (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Prep Your Colors

Mix water with blue and green coloring in small jars.

Think:

  • Blue = ocean
  • Green = land

Step 2: Set Up the Activity

Place a few cotton rounds on the table and set the jars nearby with droppers.

Keep it simple—no need to overdo it.

Step 3: Show Them Once

Demonstrate how to:

  • squeeze the dropper
  • release it into the water
  • transfer it onto the cotton pad

That’s it. One demo is enough.

Step 4: Let Them Explore

This is where the magic happens.

Your toddler will:

  • drop colors
  • layer them
  • watch them spread

Every cotton round turns into a unique little Earth 🌍

Step 5: Talk About Earth (Keep It Simple)

While they play, you can casually say:

  • “Blue is water”
  • “Green is land”
  • “We live on Earth!”

No pressure—just gentle exposure.

Step 6: Let Them Dry

Once dry, you can:

  • hang them up
  • tape them to a window
  • use them as Earth Day decorations

It’s a craft and decor—win-win.

💬 Real Mom Tip

If your toddler loves squeezing things (and most do), this activity is a guaranteed hit.

The droppers alone will keep them entertained—but adding color mixing takes it to another level.

🌿 Easy Variations

Want to switch it up?

  • Add yellow for a color mixing experiment
  • Use coffee filters instead of cotton rounds
  • Turn it into a “planet theme” activity
  • Let older kids try making patterns

If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-engagement Earth Day activity, this is one of those go-to ideas you’ll come back to again and again.

Simple. Educational. Fun.

And most importantly—something your toddler will actually enjoy.
